Colorado Dream Foundation continues to help kindle students' interest in STEM

On this particular evening, 3d through 10th grade students are taking part in a special program called Lights On Afterschool.

"It's part of the Afterschool Alliance Program. There are only four sites across the U.S. and one in Brussels that have been asked to host this STEM version of the program. So, it's part of what we offer and what's unique. We were lucky," elaborated Taavialma.

The day after Labor Day kicked off our third year of after-school programming at both Westwood and ZPlace Opportunity centers, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with our continued growth. Each site has experienced a significant uptick in enrollment from last fall, which means we are beginning our year 97% enrolled. This is entirely attributable to our amazing site teams' hard work and dedication.

Whether it is the start of various holidays across many religions and cultures, which often bring stress and pressure, or the change in weather, which might alter one's typical ways of regulating self-care. Not to mention, schools are usually out for extended periods, which can impact youth and their families in a lot of different ways.

Some people look forward to and enjoy the events and changes ahead of us, while others might have a difficult time and not be as excited - both are valid and okay!

September is National Suicide Awareness Month when we remember the lives lost to suicide, offer support for the families, communities, and individuals impacted by suicide, and walk alongside those who have, and continue to, struggle with suicidal ideation (the thought around completing suicide). Our focus is on providing them with support, connection, and resources. At Colorado Dream Foundation (CDF), we believe that the first step to supporting people lies in educating them about the signs of suicidal ideation so they can take action. In this piece, we will provide statistics about our current mental health crisis, signs to be aware of, and steps you can - and should - take if you believe someone you know is considering suicide.

Empowering communities of color through education, empathy

"The plan for today is to learn all about fish. Like, what's our Colorado state fish?" Hill said. "Some of our students want to be marine biologists, so this is a great opportunity for them."

Hill is the program coordinator for the Colorado "I Have A Dream" Foundation, a nonprofit that provides a safe place for third to eight-grade kids, especially in communities of color, while their parents are at work.
